Nice bits of info Watch! kaka-adik talaga new wave. Once you got hooked mahirap na mawala sa system. Sa kawalan ko ng kakayahan bumili ng records nuon, nag re-record nalang ako sa cassette tape ng songs so I can listen to it over and over.. lagi ko inaabangan yung 'Electronic Sunday' saka yung mellow side ng New Wave every weekdays @ 12:00 - 1:00 PM ng Power 105 DZBM..pag nakaipon ng konting baon, bili agad ako ng blank tape tapos papa-record sa Raon (P 3.00) per song..solve na solve na! Haayy..sarap magbalik tanaw.. Jo2,sa present day, meron ka pa bang hinahanap na new wave song?Ano palang first new wave song na nagustuhan mo?Ako Everything counts by DM(1983) elementary days hehe.

| Derf, you did remind me of the romantic days. I attended some of those parties you mentioned. My get-up then was turn-up slack, checkered long sleeve and deck shoes (sperry) or penny loafers....hehe. | |

| “…I wish that I could turn back the clock, bring the wheels of time to a stop, back to the days when life was so much better…” -- from the lyrics of Johnny Hates Jazz. For me, new wave music always brings back the time of the DWXB 102.7 (or just WXB 102) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DWXB-FM. Respected XB dj’s would play the songs almost like the ones mentioned by Jo2 in his list (a few of my favorites were “The Waterboys – The Pan Within, Joy Division’s Love will tear us apart, Seona Dancing’s More To Lose, New Order’s Thieves Like Us, Lotus Eater’s It Hurts and a lot more). With my dabarkad’s obsession to new wave music, we started hanging out in a house (no drugs, chicks lang) and each one would bring their own contribution of good audio equipments to satisfy our listening pleasure. This is how we started to form a small group (sounds and light mobile) although walang magaling mag-dj/spin (“bagsakan” or “teka teka lang” ang term namin noon) at katuwaan lang yun. Our friends from US & Australia provided the original vinyls kaya first time ko rin noon makapag-play ng mga plaka like The Waterboys, Gene Loves Jezebel, Siouxsie & the Banshees, The Cure, The Fall, EBTG, Propaganda, etc., Nahaluan na rin ng contemporary dance and jazz music ang vinyl collections just to cater different parties/occasions at iba binili sa Raon at nakalagay lahat ang vinyls sa plastic crate parang yung lagayan yata ng “Magnolia” Chicken (naks advertisement pa, I should get paid here hehe). Also during those times, a friend would take us sa XB station (kakilala nya yung isang dj) and have our records played during his stint, kaya naman nakapasok rin kami ng ilang beses doon sa small booth ng XB radio station sa Pasay and personally met the djs’ (The Ghost and Cool Carla), yung ibang djs naman ay na-meet na lang sa mga XB parties kadalasan sa Makati Ave. gaya ng sa isang club (Time Square yata) at doon sa Atrium (Sneak Attack). Meron din ginawa sa Makati Sports Club at Rock O’la (I think heto yun near XB across Sheraton hotel sa Vito Cruz/DLSU?). Maraming mobiles rin noon that play new wave music sa mga parties like Harmonic Trend, Social Distortion, Eyeball Dub, Audio Network, to name a few. If you know Noel Macanaya aka DJ M.O.D. (Master of Disaster) of Game Ka Na Ba, as i recall, dj rin dati sya ng Audio Network at naging vocalist rin ng The Sake. I saw him sing before and played/mixed the “slide-slide-slide” version of “Fire in Cairo by the Cure”. Until now sa gknb, I still watch/hear him play some nw tunes on certain times. I agree with Watch on his statement here: “Personally my crave for new wave never ends. For a time,I would not listen to it,then the urge keeps on coming back.It has always been there ” It’s really addictive and just sticks in the brain, blood and balunbalunan. New wave rules!!! (Sabay patugtog ng Circle Jerk’s Red Tape with the intro…”There is no such thing as new wave…) hahaha… | |

| evidently, new wave music has no boundaries. in other words, this genre of music could not be defined. observing, closely, at this form of music, it could be said that it could be a "typical" love song, e.g., fra lippo lippi, or a party danceable tracks of new order, more so, the rockabilly and/or punk rock kind of sex pistols music. in addition, we have the most debated part, which is goth music.
however, if we are to dissect deeply the roots of new wave music in philippines' shore. i could say, there was only one and there will be one radio station that pioneered new wave music here in the philippines and that is "...the station that dared to be different..." no other than but WXB 102.
long before we heard 24k friday a radio program of 99.5 RT which played "commercial" new wave. when i say commercial new wave, these are siouxsie and the banshess, x'mal deutchsland, ocean blue. in other words, these are commercially and commonly played artists we hear played on the radio over and over. by radio stations i.e. klite, dzbm, dwnu 107 and wave 180 hosted by the defunct 89 dmz.
long before these stations played new wave. WXB was already playing 24/7 new wave. when i say 24/7 they would play music which we never heard and even played by ordinary radio station. artists like jimmy jimmy, jesus and mary chain, velvet underground, immaculate fools, to name a few of the artists they introduced. proud to say, WXB's music library is so huge. hence every week, they would have new music releases.
regarding their music preference, i could say its unreachable. because they would not play a certain music due to its popularity. they would play music because they want it. thereby classifying their music as an "elite" status. notwithstanding the weak frequency they were generating. only a few would persevere listen to their music. one would attach an "alambre" to the antenna of their radio. so one could listen to this one of a kind radio station.
unfortunately, in 1987, this radio station wass sequestered by the aquino administration claiming the owner was a marcos crony.
inspite its closure, still new wave music has not subsided. many of new wave tracks that originated from WXB, like, i melt with you has been covered or revived tremendously.
this i think has placed new wave music in the most humiliating, disgraceful and shameful state. in my opinion, these artist who have been covering 80s, particularly new wave music, they are running out of ideas. i dont believe they're promoting new wave music. for me, they dont have to promote new wave music. primarily, because new wave music could make an identity of its own.
since new wave music has no boundaries. may be we can put new wave music in a nutshell. new wave music is not only music. new wave music is more than a lifestyle. new wave music is an attitude. if one wants to understand the meaning of new wave music. one needs to soak oneself into the depths of new wave music. because there's more than new wave music.
and that is the spirit and legacy of new wave music will live forever and ever.

Hi bobbyalvarez, magulo talaga ang classification, kaya siguro tinawag na new wave ito, just to group them together, pero walang issue ito.Just like Industry(check out romance post sa 80's album)new romantics din daw ito.Pero sa New Wave outpost forum,Spandau Ballet and even Duran Duran are considered new wave.Kaya tingin ko walang strict rule dito.Talk about Spandau Ballet, wala pa ding reunion kasi hindi maganda relationship ng members due to financial matters.Sinolo lahat ni Gary Kemp ang royalties yata, kay No reunion While it's different sa Duran2,buo na uli ang grupo(I've seen their concert here pero Si Simon,John and Nick lang nandito dati).Mahilig ka din pala sa new wave bobby? mahilig din, iba kasi dating ng music nila eh. siguro impluwensha to ng mga tape na nahalungkat ko dati sa mga pinsan ko.

In fact being able to go to the XB station and personally meet some dj's was already a treat in itself! New wave is definitely the 2nd British invasion.I'm quoting bangis for that.Nice story you've got there lowtus123

| [quote="watch"][quote="derf"] That Americans being "late" in the new wave thing...I noticed that in the movie 50first dates, though I've noticed Adam Sadler being a new wave fanatic based on his choices of music that he showcases on his films. [quote] si adam sandler, hindi lang new wave ang hilig, mostly 80s music ang featured sa movies nya. kahit wedding singer na 80s ang setting, pati ang big daddy na 80s din ang music. | |

| i remember one time my elder daughter asked me, "Mama, what's with New Wave ba?" i simply replied, "Angat sa iba! kaya binabalik-balikan at ginagaya kahit na ng mga bagong banda!" aside from the fact that i like new wave music, my great influence to it was my connection to the band known before as NURSERY RHYMES (i hope some of you guys can recall the band --- they used to do front acts for Identity Crisis). i was the one who handled their gigs & schedules. they normally play some songs of Gene Loves Jezebel, Bolshoi, Simple Minds, ABC, Billy Idol, The Chameleons, and the like. The band consists of all Bosconians: Achi Clavecillas (vocals), Dennis Sarte (bass), Joy Cuenco (lead guitar), Shane Badiola (rhythm guitar), Jong Perez (drums) and Jay Paloma (keyboards) --- who also happens to be the father of my 4 bagets. the first time i get to watch a new wave concert was at PICC, Crisis at Equinox. If i remember it right, it was Nursery Rhymes & Mere Mercy who did the front for Identity Crisis in October 1986. since then, i became present in all their gigs and most of the new wave parties. few years ago, as i started chatting through YM, i discovered a chatroom where most of the new wave fanatics stay and share their music collections, NewWave101. it revived the spirit of the 80's in me and made me start collecting new wave albums again. ive got a lot of memories during the new wave era... baka po maging nobela na pag inisa-isa ko pa... basta ang alam ko... masaya yung mga panahon na yun. along with the new wave music are the getups where we can freely express ourselves. one example is a friend who was once featured in GMA's iWitness... si Joseph! at this moment, if you want to hang out and enjoy new wave music and ambiance, one bar i could recommend is Anthology, located in M. Adriatico near Remedios Circle. that's where we normally hold our Grand EB yearly. long live New Wave!
