| Interesting genre,I'm sure most of us,in some way, became interested in new wave songs. Can't deny it for sure.Who can't recognize the tune Wishful Thinking,or Ghost in You? I hope everyone can participate, either by naming their favorite new wave artist, song or contribute some bits of trivia.Current or even not so current news are also a welcome treat. My only wish for this thread is please NO OFF TOPIC postings! And of course respect each others post.During the course of discussion, any requests can be posted sa request area(so as not to violate anymore the now orderly forum),or by pm if so ever wished. | |

| I'll start with my fave new wave band.Depeche Mode(DM)-synth based band, first "official release" was "photographic" from Some Bizzare compilation. So many hit songs for me to mention, but my all time favorite is Everything Counts(1983)from Construction time again album.Started being a fan since 1983 because of that song.Other hit songs:people are people, master and servant, enjoy the silence, just can't get enough, stripped etc etc.
Some synth bands more or less who are DM like are as follows:Red Flag,Camouflage,Cause and Effect. Please feel free to add if I missed someone. For Red Flag their notable songs are Russian radio,Rain,Machines,Curtains. For Camouflage it's Great commandment, love is a shield, neighbors, one fine day, thief.Lastly,Cause and Effect was an early 90's synth band with two more or less very notable songs:you think you know her and tell me what you see. Most songs of Cause and Effect are now in the HTF category.

Is She Really Going Out with Him? - Joe Jackson (1979)
Catch Me I’m Falling – Real Life (1983)
Our House - Madness (1983)
Just What I Needed - The Cars (1978)
Major Tom (Coming Home) - Peter Schilling (1983)
I Don't Like Mondays - Boomtown Rats (1979)
Black Man Ray – China Crisis (1985)

| Hi lito! What do you think defines the era? Kasi I'm a bit confused of the term New wave-it's supposed to mean new music,it's so broad in scope I think, imagine Duran duran and Spandau Ballet also fills in this category.Joe Jackson(will you be my number two? and stepping out fame also belongs to this genre),still confuses me a bit | |

| I think in the context of breaking traditional concept in music, the term New Wave is not a misnomer. I view New Wave as a social reaction to the socially offensive punk rock which momentarily replaced progressive rock in the late 70s. It is as if the minimalist but emotionally intense New Wave had somehow moderated the loud and insistent punk rock which is marked by abusive and violent lyrics. In this sense, New Wave is taken to mean a new trend or vogue. - watch wrote:

| What endeared me to new wave is its lyrical poetry that spoke about our angst-ridden youth:
“Don't hideaway inside yourself, or lie in a state in your room. We altered our image, to irresistible flame. Was she something worth loving? She was all that and more. Helping watchers on shores. With supple beauty. She was all that, and she was all that, and you know, It's my eyes that tell me: she's a work of art”
ahhh...such poetry to describe that campus crush or the special person in our lives that time.
And then:
"We used to cry About the day when one of us might fall Weak and blindly into another's arms Demands are gained from jealousies Would flow like water drowning us But leaving us with just another Lover's false alarm.....
A thousand tortured lives have fallen Wounded dying cut down by the Questions that we've sharpened Just to save our losing days We thought we'd nothing more to lose We'd tear our hearts with jagged truths And everything we'd hung to for so long Just slipped away"
no other words best describe the pain about the impending demise of a relationship that started out solid but faltered in the end….tsk tsk

Hi bobbyalvarez, magulo talaga ang classification, kaya siguro tinawag na new wave ito, just to group them together, pero walang issue ito.Just like Industry(check out romance post sa 80's album)new romantics din daw ito.Pero sa New Wave outpost forum,Spandau Ballet and even Duran Duran are considered new wave.Kaya tingin ko walang strict rule dito.Talk about Spandau Ballet, wala pa ding reunion kasi hindi maganda relationship ng members due to financial matters.Sinolo lahat ni Gary Kemp ang royalties yata, kay No reunion While it's different sa Duran2,buo na uli ang grupo(I've seen their concert here pero Si Simon,John and Nick lang nandito dati).Mahilig ka din pala sa new wave bobby?

This is one positive spin to the usual joke about ONLY IN THE PHILIPPINES. This song – no doubt one of our cult anthems – made it only to no. 70 in UK and made it nowhere elsewhere. I remember playing it to some American colleagues in the 90s and their comment was “wtf, that’s gay music!” oh those poor innocent brothas they know nothing about good music then – as you see 90s american music was dominated by boy bands and Nigmusic. Today, the Philippines take center stage in different blogspots – checkout blogspots such as this: http://lostbands.blogspot.com/2005/02/big-in-phillippines.htmlIf ever the song is considered big in other countries, it is a delayed reaction and it never occurred in the 80s. It’s only now that westerners have started to notice a song that we have revered for more than 20 years now. Colin forwarded to me months ago about a Canadian record label that has only started to re-issue new wave CDs and More to lose is one of the favored tracks. Let it be said that there is no other country in the world with a solid and cult-like new wave movement than the Philippines - and we only have to thank the radio stations back then - DWXB, DZBM and of course 99.5 RT – for introducing what became a culture for us Pinoy teenagers of the 80s. I can say this for sure with Seona Dancing – there are a number of other new wave acts which we can also lay claim as BIG ONLY IN THE PHILIPPINES back then – like arguably, the Norwegian band FRA LIPPO LIPPI.

I'm just wondering about the gay music thing...... no offense to gay music - I love the disco music of confessed gays like the Village People, Patrick Cowley, Foxy etc. - those comments by my american colleagues were made in jest like the disco-bashing of rock fans. Now you can see that even the new generation (like that comment in the blogspot coming from a 17 year old) likes More to lose and other new wave music. It's like the iconic Rubik's cube of the 80s - suddenly it's back! this time with our kids! Pinoys really have the best taste in music, rivalling Japan fans - we are what Boy George referred to in his Grammy acceptance speech "you've got taste, style, and you know a good (drag queen) when you see one."

| New Wave? Broad ang genre na ‘to. Actually it was first recognized sa Pinas when WEA/DYNA started to promote their 1980 punk rock album. Selection includes music from B52’s, The Police, Devo, Madness, etc. which they believed as the second British invation after the 60’s era.
DZRJ and 99.5 RT were the first radio stations played this kind of music in Pinas. Howlin Dave created a program “New Wave Nights” in the late 70’s that introduced underground music from UK. First heard the radical music of The Clash, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Sex Pistols with Sid Vicious version of “My Way” .
99.5 RT played their wares also through music videos on their TV program “Rhythm Of The City”. Wala pang MTV noon. Channel 13 has a New Wave program also then titled “Euro Rock” hosted by a British DJ.
Until WXB102 was born. This station based in "the bay area" (Pasay) as the DJs always mentioned in their program was very poor in sound reception. But they gain popularity and listeners through their NW concert parties. The Dawn’s “Enveloped Ideas” and Identity Crisis’ “My Sanctuary” were the most played OPM NW songs in XB. Apparels like Eclipse, Shambu, Top40 shirts and Khumbella bags were the main sponsors of this station. Since they play mostly underground music, you can buy some CS recorded materials (black cassette with dotmatrix cover printout) in Recto and Greenhills. I got The Care, The Cure and VA selections and it's worth the price.
Corinthians Garden organized their own new wave parties also to promote mobile disco. Dito nauso ang mga ext 12" LPs. NW addicts mostly teeners witnessed the latest NW dance craze which they called “Sayaw Corinthians”. Remember Roland Orzabal's move in Mad World and punk rock NW (Boys Don't Cry, Dancing With Myself, etc) for slam dancing?
WLS 97.1 has their own program too in the late 80’s. “It’s Time To Boogie” played non-stop New Wave music every Friday from 9pm to 1am.
DZBM Power 105 introduced the post WXB music from The Mighty Lemon Drops, The Lightning Seeds, New Order, etc.
NU107 follow through in 1987 with the music of Modern English, Wire Train, DM played for their test broadcast.
And the rest is history...

1)Aztec Camera-Roddy Frame is the leader of the group,I also like the songs Somewhere in My Heart, and Walk out ot winter(live version) 2)Big Country-sad to say wala na yung lead singer(Stuart Adamson) nito(read it sometime before)-I also liked fields of fire, chance. 3)Camouflage-Still active and now complete again(3 members),has a website go check it out 4)Blue Zoo-I really have no idea of any other hit aside from Love moves in Strange ways, pero sana may mag feed 5)Joy Division-Lead singer also committed suicide, pero New Order is a very worthy successor 6)Kraftwerk-one of the pioneers sa synth sound, even preceeding DM and OMD.Hits include autobahn, computer love, trans europe express.I've seen the concert sa dvd too.Somehow reminds me of DAFT PUNK 7)Pale Fountains-Mike Head leads the group,my favorites are Jeans not happening and Thank you.Other hits-across the kitchen table, palm of my hands.Shack is the current group of Mike head. 8)The Care,Wild Swans-If you listen to Whatever possessed you, talagang kikilabutan ka hehe, pero flaming sword ang major hit nila.Still looking for the 7"version ng Boyish days, anyone? 9)Red Flag-Reynolds brothers, pero sad to say, wala na din yung isa.Just like Camouflage, sounded like DM 10)Soft Cell-Marc almond is a very talented singer,a bit weird pero who cares?hehe. My take-tainted love, what, numbers, bedsitter etc. 11)The cure-another institution. One of my favorites is Catch(mellow ito)and of course the hits 12)Yazoo-Vince Clark with Alison Moyet, really don't know Vince's fascination with falsetto voiced singers, like Andy Bell of Erasure, pero it's a good combi.Hits nobody's diary, don't go,and my personal fave "only you"
Ito muna for the meantime, thanks Jo2 for the infos and your personal choices Nice bits of info Watch! kaka-adik talaga new wave. Once you got hooked mahirap na mawala sa system. Sa kawalan ko ng kakayahan bumili ng records nuon, nag re-record nalang ako sa cassette tape ng songs so I can listen to it over and over.. lagi ko inaabangan yung 'Electronic Sunday' saka yung mellow side ng New Wave every weekdays @ 12:00 - 1:00 PM ng Power 105 DZBM..pag nakaipon ng konting baon, bili agad ako ng blank tape tapos papa-record sa Raon (P 3.00) per song..solve na solve na! Haayy..sarap magbalik tanaw..

Corinthians Garden organized their own new wave parties also to promote mobile disco. Dito nauso ang mga ext 12" LPs. NW addicts mostly teeners witnessed the latest NW dance craze which they called “Sayaw Corinthians”. Remember Roland Orzabal's move in Mad World and punk rock NW (Boys Don't Cry, Dancing With Myself, etc) for slam dancing?
ahhhh salamat bangis for those memories....sino sino sainyo naggate crash sa Co-re? those mobile parties were usually acquaintance parties of school organizations (kapag tickets were from Assumption or St. Paul's bili agad) and their fave venues were the Corinthian clubhouse and Valle Verde countryclub. Guys would come dressed like Robert Smith (si skeptic!) while girls would come dressed like Boy George with beads dangling in their spraynetted hair and most if not all would come in black, some even in trenchcoats some with blue or black eyeliners. and when those 12" mixes like The Full Moon Mix of The More you live would blast in those mobile discos like Positive Noise and Social Distortion, we would get lost dancing, yes bangis is right, Roland Orzabal's move in Mad World, while the girls would dance ala Boy George's karma chameleon moves. those Co-re and Valle verde parties were sosyal coz you need wheels to enter the gates of those exclusive subdivisions and reach their clubhouses - unless you go there via taxi ako walang chikot kaya yung highschool mate ko pinilit kong hiramin nya yung isang kotse ng erpats nya para di kami magtaxi - nagdrive sya ng walang atrasan kse di sya marunong umatras nagpark pa sa malayo baka daw sya ipitin ng ibang kotse di kme makalabas
